During the 1960 tours, and on any given night, Stan would call-up scores from either library, whether it was a concert or dance date. The scores I have listed were representative of the type of material that flowed constantly into the big, black score binders which were assigned to each player. Please keep in mind this is a 'representative list,' not every chart was played during an engagement. A concert date usually ran three hours with a 15-minute intermission. Dance dates were four hours with Orchestra breaks every 45-minutes.
It also was not uncommon for the Orchestra to leave Los Angeles with anywhere from 100 to 125 charts. Then, depending upon how productive and creative the arrangers were during our extended road tours (Gene Roland, for example, wrote several new charts each week when he came on tour with us and played a lone mellophonium before the section was formed) we might return with an additional 100 or so new charts. Some were only played once. Some were never played. Others made it to the top of Stan's very personal, very subjective list and were executed time and again. Rarely, if ever, did he honor requests. The library was forever in a constant state of flux, rearrangement and never the same from one tour to the next. Stan did this to keep the music fresh, exciting and ever-evolving for our diverse audiences, many of which included a legion of fans who rarely missed a tour date.
